About PRoPRo Publications International Ltd was founded in October 1996 by Paul Brown (the ‘P’ in PRo), and Robert McCaffrey (the ‘Ro’ in PRo), to publish the original Asian Cement Magazine. Seeing that Asia was heading for a financial crash, PRo diversified, to produce European, Middle Eastern and American cement magazines.Starting in 1997, PRo also started to publish a series of cement industry Databooks. In 1998 the company commenced publication of Global Gypsum Magazine and Global Lime Magazine, and also founded its first web site - www.propubs.com. In March 1999, PRo organised its first conference, the Global Gypsum Conference in Bangkok, quickly followed by the European Cement Conference in Berlin. The company has since organised over 25 conferences and exhibitions, the largest attracting around 450 visitors, in locations including London, Barcelona, Geneva, Prague, Berlin, Dresden, Krakow, Brussels, Düsseldorf, Tehran, Mumbai, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, San Francisco, Cancun, Miami, Shanghai, Hanoi, Vienna, Moscow, Dubai and Puerto Rico. In 2000, following rationalisation in the global cement industry, PRo combined its cement magazines and the Global Lime magazine into GCL: Global Cement and Lime Magazine, which was renamed Global Cement Magazine in October 2006. PRo has a strong suite of complementary domain names for each of its products. Starting in 2004, PRo began to offer its magazines for free download to registered users around the world, and has pioneered this approach, not only in the UK, but worldwide. GCL magazine was only the second magazine to gain an ABC digital distribution certificate in the UK, and was one of the first to achieve this anywhere in the world, and went on to win a prestigious industry award for this approach (see below). In October 2006, PRo's Global Slag Magazine was featured as the guest publication on the BBC's 'Have I got news for you' satirical comedy topical news quiz TV programme. Without doubt, 2008 will see continued strong growth for PRo - even though the company doubled in size through 2007. New titles launched in 2007 including Global Insulation, Global Minerals and Global Capital will continue to establish themselves, alongside the development of ‘young’ existing titles (Global Fuels, Global Slag). PRo’s well-established titles (Global Cement Magazine and Global Gypsum Magazine, with a combined publishing history of 20 years between them) are being reinvigorated by new editorial teams. Through 2007, PRo has re-oriented its cement conference offering, away from general ‘regional’ conferences, and towards ‘must-attend’ specialised niche events, such as refractories, mortars, environmental impact abatement, trade and alternative fuels. This has already resulted in increased conference attendance, and an improved producer/vendor mix. In 2008, PRo will launch a series of forums in high-value subject areas, leveraging PRo’s strong financial database and proximity to the City of London, and continuing on from the success of the inaugural Global Capital Conference. PRo Publications International was the winner of the Periodicals Publishers Association's 'Most innovative route to market' award in 2007, presented at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, on 8 May 2007 (below). ![]() In January 2008, the company published its Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Policities, as well as codifying 'The PRo Way.' (See them here) PRo also has a consumer exhibition division. |
