The global tungsten industry is worth over $1.85bn annually, with production concentrated in China, Canada and Australia. The metal has a diverse range of uses in industry, and its price has been hitting historic highs of around US$25,000/t on the back of demand from China and India, as well as sustained demand from mature markets. The global molybdenum price has recovered from its 16-month low of US$21/lb to flirt with its all-time record high of US$39/lb set in June 2005. About 420Mlb of molybdenum was produced and consumed in 2006, with the US, China and Chile leading output. The metal is used primarily as an alloying agent in steel.
