2nd Global Landfill
Mining Conference and exhibition
'Brass
from muck'
13 September 2010
London Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Programme
Despite the continuing low levels of
commodity prices, landfill operators are still desperate to make
money out of their assets - rather than them costing money. The conference
will examine options for operators to optimise the financial returns
on these unloved but potentially-lucrative landfills, and will explore
options for down-stream by-product usage. Speakers this year will
give details of their experience of actual landfill mining projects
and the lessons learned.

The second Global Landfill Conference
will take place in London the day before the popular RWM
waste expo, in Birmingham's
NEC.

From its origins in the 1950s, Landfill Mining is an
idea whose time has come. Even aside from their valuable methane
resources, landfills should now be seen as valuable repositories
for a wealth of higher value materials. Landfill mining can recover
valuable metals, produce high quality fertiliser and construction
materials, and can make available real-estate that was once considered
lost forever.
Attendence will allow landfill operators to extend
their business models, and to extract the maximum value from their
assets. Networking opportunities at the event will be superb, and
the adjacent exhibition will allow operators to source the most cost-effective
equipment and advice for landfill mining and monetisation.
Crucial information
This conference and exhibition will give delegates
the latest information on the following crucial areas:
• Legislative status of landfills and future legislative
trends;
• Reclamation versus mining;
• What's in our landfills (and how has it changes
since burial)?;
• Methane evolution and monetisation;
• The mechanics of landfill mining: Recovery,
separation and beneficiation
• Product-stream utilisation and monetisation
• Post-mining site remediation and value
optimisation
The first Global Landfill Mining Conference (full
review) took
place at the Royal School of Arts in London on 9 October 2008. Over
100 delegates from nearly 20 countries attended the event, to hear
academics and industry participants talk about prospects for landfill
mining, and about case studies of pilot projects and successful full-scale
industrial proejcts. The programme was as given below:
Introduction - Global Landfill Mining introduction:
Dr Robert McCaffrey, Conference Convenor
Landfill mining: history and current status overview
Peter Jones, landfill industry consultant
Financial aspects of landfill mining Professor William
Hogland, University of Kalmar, Sweden
The practical, technical and commercial realities of
large scale waste movement and its application to landfill mining
Stuart
Hayward-Higham, Head of New Market Business Development, SITA
UK LTD
Accelerated methane production prior to mining Joeri
Jacobs, NV Afvalzorg, NL
Commercial prospects for landfill mining, as part of
a sustainable waste treatment process Mark Johnson, Biffa
Dumpsite rehabilitation studies in Asia, Professor William Hogland,
Sweden
Landfill mining in Pakistan, India and Turkey: practical
experience and lessons for the future Dirk Lechtenberg, MVW Lechtenberg
(Germany)

Jelle Frölich, MPI
Plastics recycling from residual waste: a practical
review Stuart Foster, Recoup
Landfill mining for plastics Guy Robinson,
Wellington Green Ltd
Practical experience with landfill mining for
metals’ Patick Davison, Mayer Environmental
Depending on the landfill ("There are landfills and there are
landfills"
according to conference convenor Robert McCaffrey), it has been shown
that integrated landfill mining is economically feasible - although
market rates for plastics, metals, land and secondary fuels can
also have an impact on potential profitability.
